This section assesses the character of the US-Turkish relationship before the commencement of the Syrian Civil War in 2011. It will examine the historical ties between the two nations, which have been allies in NATO, their political, military, and economic cooperation. Also, this section will discuss previous areas of disagreement and tension, such as the Iraq War and Turkey’s relations with regional actors. This will provide a baseline for understanding how the Syrian conflict later impacted the existing framework of the bilateral relationship, including cooperation in fields such as counter-terrorism, and how it affected cooperation, particularly in fields such as counter-terrorism.
