This section covers mathematical models used to track and control the spread of plant diseases. We will explore compartmental models (SIR, SIS) adapted for plant epidemiology, where susceptible, infected, and recovered plants are tracked over time. Factors influencing disease spread, such as wind direction, plant density, and fungicide application rates, will be incorporated into the models. Students will learn how to use these models to predict epidemic outbreaks, evaluate control strategies, and minimize crop losses. The use of differential equations and numerical simulations will be showcased.
