This research project embarks on an in-depth exploration of the underlying motivations and hopes expressed within the lyrical content of rock music. The study aims to decipher the thematic underpinnings of rock music across different eras and subgenres, providing insights into the evolving societal, political, and personal landscapes reflected in the songs. Through a systematic content analysis of selected rock band discographies, this endeavor seeks to identify recurring themes, rhetorical strategies, and shifts in artistic intentions. The project will examine how rock bands, as cultural commentators, use their music to articulate desires, anxieties, and aspirations of their audiences, and how these expressions have shaped the cultural landscape. It will further consider the influence of socio-political contexts on the thematic content of the music, and the impact of these themes on audience perception and identification with the bands and their messages. The research will employ both quantitative and qualitative methods, including thematic coding and close textual analysis, to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between artistic expression and societal values.
